Russian Amazonite Gemstone

Nicknamed the "Amazon Stone" Russian amazonite is a beautiful green-blue member of the feldspar family. Similar to jade in appearance amazonite is surprisingly not from the Amazon but originated in mountains of Russia.

Originally amazonite was called 'Amazon Stone.' It was later renamed amazonite. Amazonite was named for the Amazon region of South America. Early jade deposits in the Amazon were misidentified as a new stone. When a deposit of similar gemstone was located in Russia it was dubbed Amazonite and the misnomer stuck. Ironically no Amazonite has ever been found in the Amazon.

Amazonite is a blue-green variety of the orthoclase feldspar family. It was originally thought that copper particles lent amazonite its lush color similar to turquoise or Paraiba tourmaline. However recent studies suggest that microscopic lead and water infusions are the source of the beautiful blue-green. Premium amazonite typically displays more green than blue.

Amazonite is a prized gemstone in China because of its resemblance to jade. High demand from the Chinese gemstone market makes this a difficult stone to find in the United States.
