A device similar to a household toaster oven is utilized in this process, as it allows the stones to be monitored and removed once the desired level of color is reached. Care must be taken throughout the entire process, as heating the material for too long can ruin it, creating a gemstone with a milky appearance. Once complete, the treatment is very stable, though stones should not be exposed to heat or light for extended periods, as this may affect the color.
