Sunstone is formed in molten lava and is discharged onto the earth's surface with the help of a volcano. The lava weathers away or is broken. Fine crystals of sunstone are then released. The Madras Sunstone is found with copper in it which is the cause for the range of colors in the stone from the color of water to yellow and many shades of green red and pink.

Madras Sunstone is a member of the feldspar group of minerals and is closely related to moonstone. Unique to sunstone is the schiller phenomenon a bronzy iridescent luster caused by the millions of microscopic copper platelets found in these stones. The schiller phenomenon makes the stone appear to glow as if it had its own internal light source.
