Helenite, also known as Mount St. Helens obsidian, is a man-made loose gemstone created from the ash and debris left from the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington State in 1980. The loose stone's formation was a happy accident discovered by workers involved in the cleanup process when intense heat from their equipment caused the volcanic ash and rock to fuse and form a green, glass-like substance. Helenite is not a loose gem in the natural sense but is rather a type of glass, specifically obsidian, made predominantly of silica. Despite being a man-made gem, it is highly prized for its vibrant colors, ranging from striking emerald green to deep blue and fiery red, depending on the minerals included during its creation.
