What is larimar?
Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite — a sodium calcium silicate mineral — found exclusively in a single mine in the Bahoruco Mountain Range of the Dominican Republic. Its distinctive blue color, caused by calcium being partially replaced by copper in its crystal structure, ranges from pale sky blue to deep ocean blue with white cloud-like patterns. Larimar was officially discovered in 1974 by Dominican Miguel Méndez, who named it after his daughter Larissa and the Spanish word for sea ('mar').
Larimar ring in sterling silver
Our larimar rings feature large, cushion-shaped and oval larimar cabochons set in ornate sterling silver settings. The contrast of the stone's sky-blue color against silver metalwork is particularly striking. Many designs incorporate Bali-style silverwork or oxidized silver detailing that complements larimar's organic, oceanic aesthetic.
Larimar necklace and pendant styles
Larimar pendants at Shop LC range from simple bezel-set oval drops on sterling silver chains to elaborate multi-stone designer pendants. The stone's ocean-like appearance is especially suited to teardrop and freeform cuts that showcase its natural color patterns. Necklace lengths from 18" to 20" with lobster claw clasps.
Why is larimar so rare?
Larimar is only found in one location on Earth: a single mine in the Dominican Republic known as 'Los Chupaderos.' The deposit has finite reserves, and production has been declining as the easiest-to-access areas become depleted. This geological scarcity, combined with growing global demand, makes authentic larimar genuinely collectible and an excellent value-retention gemstone.
Larimar stone meaning and healing properties
Larimar is often called the 'Atlantis Stone' or 'Dolphin Stone' in crystal healing traditions, associated with tranquility, clear communication, and connection to the ocean. It is believed to carry the calming energy of the sea and sky, promoting emotional healing, inner peace, and serenity. Larimar is one of the most searched gemstones in the spiritual and crystal jewelry category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where does larimar come from?
Larimar is found exclusively in the Dominican Republic — specifically in a single mine in the Bahoruco Mountain Range. It is one of the rarest gemstones in the world, found in no other location on Earth. All Shop LC larimar is authentic Dominican larimar.
Q: How do I know if larimar is authentic?
Authentic larimar has a matte to waxy luster, distinctive blue-white cloud-like patterns, and a cool feel. It is never perfectly uniform in color — natural variation is a sign of authenticity. Glass imitations lack the natural pattern variation of real larimar. Shop LC provides only genuine Dominican larimar.
Q: What does larimar symbolize?
Larimar symbolizes tranquility, clear communication, and connection to the sea and sky. It is called the 'Atlantis Stone' in crystal traditions and is associated with emotional healing, inner peace, and the calming energy of the Caribbean. It is one of the most popular gemstones in the spiritual jewelry market.
Q: How should I care for larimar jewelry?
Clean larimar with mild soap and lukewarm water using a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and chemicals. Larimar is moderately soft (4.5–5 Mohs) and can be scratched — store away from harder gemstones. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, which can fade the blue color.
