The Ethiopian Welo opal displays milky white, light blue grey or golden cream base with iridescent rainbow flecks. Ranking 5.5 to 6.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness, the gemstone is the birthstone for the month of October. In addition, the opal is said to be symbol of hope and purity. To be on the safe side, clean your opals using a mesh rag dipped in mild detergent added to warm water. Never soak or immerse your opal jewelry.
