Determining Pink Diamond Value

Is pink diamond valuable? The value of colored stones is typically determined by a combination of its color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. This is no different when determining what pink diamond is worth. These guidelines will help you choose pink diamond for your collection.

  • Pink Diamond Color

In pink diamond, the combination of hue, tone and saturation of the gemstone plays a significant part in determining the perfect color. A high-quality pink diamond must have a primary pink hue with lighter tones and higher saturation. The color of pink diamond varies from candy floss pink to rich cherry jam hues. Shop LC provides light pink to fancy light pink diamonds.

  • Pink Diamond Clarity

Pink diamonds usually display some inclusions. A diamond with higher clarity is highly valuable. The value of fancy diamonds increases with their strength and purity of color. Due to the rarity of pink diamonds, flawless stones are nearly impossible to find. Most stones will bear some inclusion, a geological fingerprint that tell the stone’s story, starting from deep within the earth before coming to the surface in a stunning jewelry item.

  • Pink Diamond Cut

Pink diamond displays absolute color and brilliance when cut in traditional round shape. Due to cubic structure, diamond displays excellent optical properties. It is important to cut pink diamonds with strict proportions and finish to get the most striking color and effect.

  • Pink Diamond Carat

The price of diamonds rises with their carat weight. Any pink diamond above 0.2 carat is extremely valuable, expensive and rare. Most Argyle pink diamonds average in size from 0.02 carats to 0.1 carats. Pink diamonds from our source rarely reach larger sizes, and when they do, are auctioned in an exclusive private auction.

Caring for Pink Diamond

Diamonds are the hardest material on earth, and rank ten on the Mohs scale of hardness, topping the chart. The resistance to scratching makes a diamond the perfect choice for jewelry, especially a signature piece that sees daily wear. Their durability is dependable and resistant to damage and chipping in most situations.

The best way to care for your stone is through standard gem and jewelry care. Clean with a soft bristled brush, lukewarm soapy water, and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners as these devices can damage or break the stone. Avoid heat or harsh chemicals, which can also damage the appearance of the gem.

Store your diamonds in a clean and dry place in fabric-lined jewelry case or box with compartments and partitions to prevent jewels from scratching each other.

Where Does Pink Diamond Come From?

Pink diamonds are one of the rarest fancy colored diamonds in the world. Only a handful of locations across the globe have ever been successful in producing natural pink diamonds. The Argyle mine in Western Australia produces over ninety-percent of the world’s supply of pink diamonds. However, the stone is so rare that only one-percent of the mine’s total diamond yield is of sufficient quality to be a gem-grade pink diamond. Shop LC sources pink diamonds from these mines. A small deposit of these gemstones is also found in Brazil, Russia, Siberia, South Africa, Tanzania and Canada.

How is Pink Diamond Mined?

For the majority of the Argyle mine’s life, mining had been conducted by digging open pits across the surface of the landscape. Mined rock would be transported by truck to large conveyors for sorting. However, recent developments at the mine have completely transformed how the stone is now extracted from the ground. Pit mining operations ceased in 2013 and underground operations started. Mine operations are now projected to last until at least 2020. If underground techniques weren’t used, mine operations would have already finished long ago.

Using automated mining practices, rock undergoes a crushing process that creates nuggets of stone at least 15 millimeters across. The nuggets are washed with water to remove dust and then are sorted by size. Nuggets are next placed in a suspension that filters out diamond nuggets from other heavy minerals.

Finally, by utilizing a proprietary x-ray process, the mine scans the remaining rock for precious diamonds. This economic decision lets the mine produce the best yield of pink diamonds. For every 30,000 crushed rocks processed, one precious diamond will be found!

Just like Shop LC, the Argyle mine is a 365-day 24/7 operation.

Partnership with the Aboriginal People

In 2005 new mine leadership took steps the strengthen the bond with the Traditional Owners of the land the mine rests on. These are the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. Much like the Native Americans of the Americas, the Aboriginals are loosely affiliated groups of people that existed in Australia before European settlement of the island continent.

When the mine first opened in the mid-1980s, a flimsy agreement existed between mine management and Aboriginal groups. For many years, this arrangement underwent a great deal of criticism for many reasons. Opponents weren’t happy with how the mine compensated the Aboriginal people, nor were all the groups with traditional claims to the land represented.

The new agreement proves beneficial to both the indigenous people and the mine operators. The mine has significantly increased employment of Aboriginals, training them for positions that let them advance internally or pursue careers within the mining industry. Also, a percentage of mine proceeds are returned to the native groups through specially created trusts. The trusts don’t benefit any single individual. They exist to put money back into the community by creating infrastructure, housing, and community property such as parks. The program has enjoyed success as it helps pull Aboriginals out of poverty and away from dependence on government programs. It has helped ensure a mutually successful future for all.

What is the Barramundi Gap?

The Argyle diamond mine is located at the Barramundi Gap, a location held sacred by several of the indigenous Aboriginal groups. It’s a sacred woman’s site and holds special significance in their culture.

One of the Aboriginal groups, the Gija, have an oral tradition that explains how the Barramundi Gap received its name and how the deposits of precious diamonds that exist here. One day, a group of Gija women was stalking a barramundi, a type of fish. Their dogged pursuit of the animal forced it into a cave.

At first, the barramundi thought they had escaped. However, with horror, the barramundi realized they had become trapped in the shallow and muddy waters of the cave entrance – easy pickings for the Gija women and their nets.

Unable to find an escape route, the barramundi swims back to the women at full force, leaping high into the air and over their nets! As the barramundi does so, several of its scales are shed, falling into the water and the ground. The shimmering scales become the diamonds of the Argyle mine.

The barramundi later escapes into the clear waters of nearby Cattle Creek. Here it is transformed into a great white rock. Several of the women who were pursuing this fish were also transformed into white rock, resulting in an unusual rock formation in the area today.
