Where Does Ilakaka Hot Pink Sapphire Come From?

Shop LC sources this variety of pink sapphire from the Ilakaka village, in Southwest Madagascar.

Pink sapphire is found throughout the world. However, the principal deposits of pink sapphire are found in Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Madagascar.

In 1998, the discovery of sapphires turned Ilakaka, a tiny village in the south west of Madagascar, into a bustling international mining hub. Seemingly overnight, and influx of hopeful prospectors transformed this sleepy village into a bustling boomtown. At its height, over 100,000 miners, stone traders, and other hopefuls settled into the region.

Since the initial discovery, there have been several booms and busts in the area as new finds are found, exploited, and exhausted. This makes it tough to track the number of mining operations operating at any one time. A lack of infrastructure limits mechanized mining operations, meaning most digging is done by hand, using artisanal methods.

Over the last 20 years, illegal mining has resulted in deep holes across the village, with residents searching knee-deep in the mud for stones. In search of sapphire, these illegal operations might dig pits up to 50 feet deep. As a result, people lost their lives, either due to sudden collapsing of holes or due to dangerous gases in the sapphire pit. Shop LC does not condone these illegal mining practices, and only sources gemstones from reputable trading partners.

How is Ilakaka Hot Pink Sapphire Mined?

High-quality pink sapphires were initially found in alluvial deposits, which are loose bits of gravel moved by forces of nature, such as by rivers or rain. Miners search for sapphire in the river beds known as paleochannels. By using hand tools, they dig pits to reach the gems, which are then washed in the nearby river.

However, as these reserves dried up, miners now utilize makeshift mining practices, wherein they go down a pit in search of sapphire gemstones by using a simple pulley system. Once miners reach the bottom of the hole, they use hand tools to extract the exposed pink sapphire. The pits are made less than a meter in diameter to lower the chances of collapse.
